    Our Next Speaker

Our speaker for November is again back by popular demand,  Dr. Mike Daley is a freelance popular music history lecturer around Toronto.  He holds a Ph. D in Musicology from York University  and has taught at Guelph, McMaster, Waterloo and York Universities.  He has toured the United States and Canada as a musician with Jeff Healey and many other bands.   He is also featured on dozens of recordings, both as a guitarist and as a singer, and has been published widely on a variety of musical subjects.

Mike has spoken to us in the past on the lives and stories of Elvis, Leonard Cohen and the Motown scene.   This time around he will tell us the Gordon Lightfoot story.  Gordon Meredith Lightfoot Jr. was a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist who achieved international success in folk, folk-rock, and country music.  Credited with helping to define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s, he has been referred to as Canada's greatest songwriter, having several gold and multi-platinum albums and songs covered by some of the world's most renowned musical artists. "His name is synonymous with timeless songs about trains and shipwrecks, rivers and highways, lovers and loneliness."

    Activities

One of the many benefits of membership is access to regularly scheduled gatherings of club members who share common interests.  Some Activities are seasonal, while others run throughout the year.

Providing a variety of activities gives members an opportunity to get to know each other better while doing something that they enjoy.  We currently have over a dozen such groups in our club, like euchre, weekly group walks, book and movie clubs, golf, trivia and much more.

    Events

Our members enjoy a variety of social events.  Some local events include going to theatres and tourist attractions and visiting local restaurants for lunch or dinner.  We educate as well as entertain by providing trips to museums, historic sites and tours of local businesses and industries.  We come together annually to celebrate special times together like summer BBQ's and Holidays. These special events require advance registration and payment.

On this page you can also see details of multi-day trips and vacations organized especially for PROBUS Members through HNA Travel by Lakeside member Shirlie van Puttin.

Carlton University needs our help with a unique project called Sensor Networks for Safe and Engaged Mature Drivers (SENSE-MD).

We are currently conducting a study titled "SENSE-MD: Survey for Mature Drivers," and we are inviting Canadian residents aged 55 or older who currently hold or have held a valid driver’s license in the past year to participate. The survey is anonymous and takes 20-30 minutes to complete. Your participation will greatly assist us in developing technology to help older drivers access personalized risk information, promote safer driving, and support aging in place.  Click here for more information.

The survey is available online and can be completed at any time before October 31, 2024. As a token of appreciation, participants will have the option to enter a draw for one of ten $25 Amazon gift cards.
